Is this you?
- Something happened — and your body still reacts like it's happening now.
- You've talked about it. A lot. Talking hasn't moved it.
- Triggers feel bigger than they should — and you can't talk yourself out of them.
- You're high-functioning on paper, and quietly bracing all the time.
- You've heard about EMDR and want someone who's actually trained in it, not someone who took a weekend workshop.
What EMDR actually is (in plain English)
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. The short version: your brain has a built-in way of digesting hard experiences, and sometimes — usually with trauma — that process gets stuck. EMDR helps your brain finish the job, using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or tones) while you briefly hold a memory in mind. You don't have to relive anything in detail. You don't have to talk about it for months first. And you stay in control the whole time.
- Recognized by the WHO, APA, and VA as a first-line trauma treatment.
- Effective for single-incident trauma, complex/childhood trauma, anxiety, phobias, and grief.
- Often works in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy for trauma.
What working with an EMDR therapist looks like
The first few sessions aren't EMDR — they're history, goals, and resourcing (basically: making sure you've got tools to settle your nervous system before you stir anything up). Then you and your therapist pick a target memory and work through it in structured phases. Most people feel a real shift within a handful of sessions on a single target. Bigger or more layered trauma takes longer — but it moves.
How to know it's the right fit

EMDRIA is the credentialing body. We verify training before anyone gets listed.
They explain the model clearly.
If your first call leaves you more confused, that's a sign. Good EMDR therapists demystify the work.
They pace it with you.
EMDR done well isn't a fire-hose. It's collaborative, and you set the pace.
